How to find a YouTube video you watched before

If you were signed in when you watched it, it's probably in your watch history, and you can search it.

On a phone. In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Manage all history. Search looks for specific videos; Calendar shows what you watched between two dates. Your recent history is also in the You tab, under History.

On a computer. Go to myactivity.google.com, open YouTube History, then Manage history, and use Search. On youtube.com, History in the menu on the left has a search box of its own. Searches look mostly at titles, so try the words most likely to be in one.

Search by date. If you remember roughly when (the week of a trip, the night before an exam), the calendar in My Activity is often quicker than guessing words.

When it isn't there. Your history won't have it if you watched while signed out, in Incognito mode, while history was paused, or longer ago than your auto-delete setting keeps (you can see yours in My Activity, under Auto-delete). A video that has since been removed or made private won't open either. Then try YouTube search with what the video was about rather than its title, filter by upload date or length, or look through the uploads of the channel you think it came from.

For next time. Keep the videos you'll want again somewhere you can search by what they were about. In Krater, every video you add is in your library with your rating and review, and you can ask Krappy, Krater's assistant, in your own words ("the one where they rebuild an old bike"): he looks through your library first, then the other videos Krater knows. He can't see your YouTube history and doesn't search the whole of YouTube, so he finds what's in Krater.
